Addy Arrives

Addy flew from Humboldt on November 23rd to Wilmington. We arrived in our anchorage at sunset and set up the welcome flag.

Nate dinghied and then Ubered to airport to pick her up at midnight. While the girls slept, Nate and I were up at dawn to start our overnight passage to Savannah. Addy was originally flying into Savannah, but weather delayed us getting to that location in time. I loved waiting up and seeing Addy’s sneakers added to our shoe pile.

Our passage to Savannah was 34 hours non-stop, but having Addy on board to help with night watches helped so much. Plus we were all excited to hear all about her college life.

During my 1am watch a vessel came on the radio to ask if I was heading to bay near Charleston. I replied no on radio and then got a long explanation of where to go to avoid the coast. All this information without asking if I need help. I felt I had gotten “mansplained” as soon as he heard a female voice.

We made it to Bull River Marina at sunset. Thanksgiving in Savannah has been a goal for months and our arrival felt grand.

We pushed Nate’s birthday celebration as day later and the captain turned 49. He had special mail awaiting him at the marina. We rented a car to provision, get Addy to a gym to complete her rowing workout, walk Queso on the beautiful streets and find a chocolate birthday cake.

On the 27th of November we drove to Charleston to pick up our car that had been waiting since Nate drove it from Boston to Charleston. Addy was in need of a “real raincoat” from REI and I used the journey to visit Fort Moultrie National Historic Park. This fort was attacked by the British in 1776.
