Back to Moving South

On November 2nd, we arrived to Block Island. The sail was COLD and required all our winter gear. Nate often takes on the majority of the sails and seems to have the best attitude of embracing whatever weather is present. Josephine and I are weenies but will rug up and take our watches to give Nate a break. However, a break means Nate is still watching our headings from inside and has one ear to the wind in case we need his assistance.

Block Island was definitely quiet with November being off season. There were not any open eateries. We all went to shore for a run as we were training for the Turkey Trot in Savannah at the end of the month. Looks like a perfect summer spot but can imagine harsh winters with little to block one from the storms.

The next day we arrived in Old Saybrook, CT to a very still mooring ball. We were able to walk a mile to Starbucks for Josephine to study, Queso to stretch and I dropped some finished books at a Free Little Library. The sunset was stunning.

On November 5th we arrived back in Port Washington to drop Josephine at the airport. She went to Oklahoma City to visit with friends and attend a Heritage Hall football game. Our airport drop off was an Uber ride there. However, on the way back to the boat we decided to use as much public transport as possible. The bus from airport to train stop took a LONG time as the bus stopped every other block. It was full of people and I spent my time wondering about each person’s story (ie. are they going home from work? Is that person retired? Does this family live locally?) The train station in Flushings seemed to be set in an Asian neighborhood which has storefronts of hanging meats and there was even a woman squeezing fresh orange juice at a table stand right on the sidewalk. High density living in a bustling city was personally eye opening for me. I was not aware that some of these conditions were prevalent next to such a rich city. From the train station we still had to Uber to our boat a short distance.

While in Port Washington we provisioned groceries, did laundry, filled the propane tanks and Nate completed the radar installation. I was able to get a pedicure and Nate got a haircut.
