Island Dog

On January 4th we returned to Shroud Cay to explore further after having been there the week before with our boat guests. Queso loves to go ashore were he can be free on uninhabited islands. He gets very excited about the dinghy and starts barking even as it gets lowered into the ocean. We have finally found a second bark collar that works because I was certain I was loosing my hearing when I rode in the dinghy with him.

The next day Josephine stayed on the boat to complete a final and kicked the rest of the crew off the boat. This gave Nate, Queso and I lots of time to explore a mangrove river that connects the west and east sides of the island. We all took a swim at the end of the river, had the entire place to ourselves and admired the plants which grow despite all the salt.

Meanwhile Addy was still in California training for the rowing season. Aunt Jo took her on lots of outings, including some ocean swims which were great cross training for Addy.

On January 6th, we moved further south to Warderick Wells which has turned out to be one of my all time favorite spots in the Bahamas. It has mooring balls in a protected bay which insures a good night’s sleep, hiking trails, wildlife, a protected national park, a small informational office, beach, dinghy tie up, a book exchange and sand bars.

We were able to meet SV Life on Mars in person here after chatting on social media since arriving in December. They are a family that sold it all in Delaware to move onto their trawler with three kids and a dog. We enjoyed learning how they work remotely, their adventures on the ICW moving South which included broken boat parts, a fire and lost dinghy.

Josephine took another online final while we moored here for two nights. This allowed for Nate and I to explore the trails which had sharp rock and arid plant life due to little rain this time of year.
